Candle safety matters: Candles cause an estimated 5,910 home fires in the U.S. each year. Scented products can also cause pet birds great respiratory distress. Make sure you’re smart with any candle or melts you buy.

Safety

Follow these guidelines to make your habits safer.

Candles

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire.

  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.

  • Do not use any scented candles around a pet bird.

  • Avoid drafts, vents, or air currents.

  • Never touch or move a burning or hot candle.

  • Place burning candles at least three inches apart.

  • Burn a candle for no more than four hours at a time.

  • Never use water to extinguish a candle.

  • Trim wick to a quarter inch before lighting, each time you light. Keep wax free from wick trimmings.

  • Stop burning when a half inch of wax remains in the jar. See the Cleaning page for information on what to do next.

Wax melts

  • To prevent fire or injury, remove all packaging before use.

  • Use only in tea-light warmers or UL-listed electric warmers approved for wax melts.

  • Read and follow all instructions provided with your warmer before use, and do not leave warmer unattended.

  • Do not melt on stovetop or unapproved appliances.

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.

  • Do not use any scented wax melts around a pet bird.

  • Do not add water.

  • Use only in well-ventilated areas away from flammable materials.

  • Discontinue use if dish contains less than 1/2" of wax.
